Naomi Mackliff Reading Response: "Planet Lulakala"
Molly walked to her brother’s home in Quebinga, Zalagne, a major city in the world of Lulakala. She and her brother grew up together in a small village before moving into a major city. Unfortunately, their parents died as causalities in a recent war, a very common occurrence in this planet. Lulakala is very similar to earth, yet it is a complete dystopian world, full of corrupted aliens and humans. All beings have lost hope of a better life and a way out. Those who have attempted to escape to other worlds have been imprisoned, tortured and killed. The majority of the beings living there are afraid to advocate for their freedom, for mass genocides have taken place before and they do not want to risk the lives of their families in exchange for better treatment. However, a strange sense of hope has taken over Molly; her brother Joel has been planning on a route of escape from planet Lulakala, to the planet Ut, a beautiful planet with no mass killings and corruption. Once Molly arrives at Joel’s home, he showed her a secret room underground where he keeps his spaceship.
“With this spaceship, I’ve designed a function to shrink us and the spaceship together, while making it invisible to the public eye. Once we have a good distance away from planet Lulakala, we can blast the spaceship at full speed and make it to planet Ut.” He said.
Molly gave a warm smile, “I really do believe we could leave this dark world behind, we won’t have to deal with poverty, murders, and all that is evil anymore.”
In an excited state, they follow through their plan make it out of Lulakala, laughing with hope, relief, and joy as the spaceship begins to approach planet Ut.
Abruptly, an alarm rings in the Lulakala office of the central intelligence “Law and Order” government association branch, drawing the attention of the aliens and humans working there. They were able to detect Molly and Joel’s spaceship, immediately understanding their attempt to escape.
“Call in the assassin,” demands a dark voice, “We have some criminals breaking the law and this will cause an uproar in our society if they succeed. If people find out they made it out, they will all strive to do the same. We must stay in control of our power.”
A few minutes later, an assassin named Zwaakale (a.k.a Bob), emerges from planet Lulakala, heading after Molly and Joel. Speeding up, he finds them then begins to prepare fire, scaring the siblings. Fearful of losing their lives, they speed up more, with planet Ut in view, so close yet they were aware of the possibility of dying before they could make it.
“We can’t stop now, if we die, we will die trying,” said Joel in a determined manner.
Bob catches up to them, and sends a few missiles, enough for an explosion to finish them off, including Bob himself. Bob opens fire, the spaceships burst into flames, and that small path in space became darkness, slowly closing the route to planet Ut.
Everyone heard about the tragic incident, another failed attempt at escape. Truly, all hope was lost for them and they continued to live in the disastrous cycle of life on Lulakala, just the way the authorities wanted it to be.
But there was one young girl who discovered another underground route to Ut…
This is brilliant. To me it seems that you used a variety of popular stories and movies to create your own alternate universe. When I read about the dystopian society detecting the ship I automatically thought about George Orwell's 1984. Although we do not see a spaceship in the book, we can compare how both dystopian societies control all aspects of their people's life. Also, I thought about mission impossible because this is exactly what happened in this story. The people in this society are trying to do the impossible: which in this case is escaping. Also lets not forget the name Molly. Did you get the name Molly from Dolly in Women On The Edge of Time?
